QuickTime woes

How many of you are sick of the stupid "some of your quicktime software is out of date. you can fix this problem by updating to the latest version" popup? I am! When I click "Do it now" it errors out - and I've run Apple Software Update and nothing is out of date!

Here's the fix, found at http://forums.ilounge.com/showthread.php?t=194033 (5th post down). I'll just copy the 5th, 7th, and 8th posts verbatim:

i've been looking into a few of these over at Apple Discussions recently. one of the things that can cause them is old QuickTime system files (from earlier versions) lurking about in your C:\Windows\System32\ folder.

so let's have a look in there to see if we can find anything odd.

first go into "My Computer", go "Tools > Folder Options", and click on the "View" tab.

select "Show hidden files and folders".
deselect "Hide extensions for known filetypes".

now do an "All files and folders" search for "QuickTime".

what's the full name (including filename extensions) of every QuickTime-related file and folder that shows up in your \Windows\System32\?

(if you've got a QT 7.1.x, only two QT files should be in there: QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx.)

Thanks b noir!! I started having this problem when I first installed iTunes on Vista and it drove me crazy. I uninstalled QuickTime, deleted the directory c:\windows\system32\QuickTime, and removed the following files in my c:\windows\system32 directory
QTIM32.DLL
QTOLE32.DLL
QTMWCI32.DLL
QuickTimeMusicalInstruments.qtx

I then reinstalled QuickTime and it worked great.

Thanks again,
lawman

Thanks for documenting this, I was finally able to fix this annoying problem!

For me, the problem was caused by installing an older children's drawing program (Broderbund Kid Pix) on Windows XP. Uninstalling that program did not help, but your solution worked - I deleted the QuickTime folder and QuickTimeMusicalInstruments.qtx under C:\WINDOWS\system32 and rebooted the computer. Re-installing QuickTime was not necessary in my case. ...
